- June 2004 A Blind Guide I recently got a new tool: a hand-held GPS. Of course, it’s kind of a toy to me – you’ve probably noticed how little boy’s toys later turn into men’s “tools.” GPS stands for Global Positioning Satellite. Circling around the earth are a dozen or so satellites that this little device reads. Amazingly, it can tell you where you are – anywhere on earth – within about 10 feet! It can also lead you from one point to another. This mapping feature has become very handy to me. My GPS, clairvoyantly, knows where I am, the upcoming street names (when you are driving) and, in all, can tell me how to get home – even from 3000 miles away. But it isn’t foolproof…. I was teaching our youngest son, Travis how to drive a stick-shift car one evening. We took off from our house and drove, randomly, through the backstreets around our neighborhood. I brought along the GPS knowing that it would get us home from wherever we were. As night fell, we were driving around a subdivision, and I got to thinking it might be a good time to head back home. I cranked up the GPS. We followed its directions religiously…..but kept hitting dead-ends and cul-de-sacs. We could not find a main road to lead us out. I was lost ½ mile from my house! Evidently the subdivision was too new for the GPS. Cartography had not caught up with technology. Sheepishly, I called Barbi – she (laughing all the way) led me home by means of an old-fashioned map….. It’s good to know that God always knows where we are….any place on earth, and that the way to heaven doesn’t come through some means devised by man’s ingenuity, but through a plan He devised in ancient ages past…superceding what we understand as time. It’s wisdom beyond man’s finite mind. That old-fashioned roadmap will get you there….from here.
