USGN Article – February 2005

"The February Blues"

Unless you happen to live in Florida or southern California, February is often a time that must simply be endured. When Barbi and I lived in Chicago, I remember either gray days….and lots of snow – or clear blue sky….and 20 below zero. Both were not real encouraging.

February seems miles away from the state and county fairs and harvest festivals that happen in the Fall. But it seems equally far away from the new life that comes each Spring – the flowers, buds on the trees, and air that seems to somehow smell “fresher.”

This seasonal in-between time can be very difficult for some folks; greatly affecting their moods. I have read about people in particularly grey sky areas of the country having to sit under special full-spectrum lighting (that simulates sunshine) to keep from being depressed.

But beyond weather differences, February can also be a metaphor for other parts of our lives.

Maybe it’s “February” in your marriage or in some family relationship. Maybe you remember better days….and don’t see any prospect of the joy of “Spring.” Perhaps the job you have worked at faithfully is not what it used to be.

What makes these things more difficult is that we know when April comes things will change in the weather. We don’t always have that same confidence in other areas of our lives.

My prayer is that you will hold on in every area of your life; that you will put God first and trust Him to bring you through this in-between season. Things really will change, even if you don’t see any way they could at this moment. Remember, He is the One who said, “….I know the plans I have for you….”. And they are not “grey sky” plans, but something far greater!
